New Player Apps: OPEN

This game is invite-only. See more about this in the guidelines below.

Players can also RESERVE.

NOTE: The "request an invite from the mods" option will be allowed going forward. Any apps that come after game start will be processed quickly to allow players to join the starting mingle.

APP PROCESSING

Players may app at any time and this is first come, first serve.

Apps may only be closed occasionally due to large plots where it would be hard to intro.

GAME CAPS

Player Cap: 30 players
Characters Per Player: 4

CAST CAPS

Cast Cap: 10

Completely original OCs will count as a cast. OCs based on tabletop or MMO canons will count towards the MMO or tabletop canons. Big sprawling franchises count as one cast as far as caps are concerned, so Star Wars would be the only Star Wars cast. Anything Marvel would be contained under a Marvel cap, and that includes MCU, the comics, the animated shows, everything.

Versions of each character: 3

We allow three versions of the same character in game, such as an AU and the canon version, or three versions from three different incarnations of a canon (ex: comics Barry Allen, animated Barry Allen, and live action TV show Barry Allen).

NEW PLAYER APPS

Invite-Only: For new players, the game is currently invite-only. There is a space on the app to put which current player invited you. New invites can be extended to anyone a current player wants to extend them to, including people from [personal profile] enablemeplz or the "App This Please" thread on [community profile] rpanons.

Players who don't know anyone in the game can request an invite directly from the mods. Please note "Mod invite requested" in the invite section. If requesting a mod invite, it is required to give the mods your handle and plurk name, but you can provide it in the mod contact if you'd prefer to keep it private.

Former players of games run by the head mod, [community profile] longestnight, [community profile] thelegion, any iteration of [community profile] wilderlands, and [community profile] piper90 can note they were a former player in place of an invite. Please let the mods know the player name you used at that time.

New Player App Wait Queue: Any apps that come in after one of the caps is met will remain in a wait queue and will be processed when a player or cast slot is available.

A new player app in the wait queue counts as first come, first served. As long as a character is listed in the wait queue, current players and any other new players that come along cannot reserve or app that character. If a cast is close to being capped, a new player app in the wait queue also reserves a cast slot.

Reserves: A reserve also reserves cast or player slots. Reserves last 7 days.

CURRENT PLAYER APPS

Current Player Wait Queue: As long as cast and Character version caps aren't met, apps will be processed regularly. Any apps that come in after a cast cap or character version cap is met will remain in the queue and will only be processed when a slot is available.

Wait Queue Reserves: An app in the wait queue counts as first come, first serve. As long as a character is listed in the wait queue, current players and any other new players that come along cannot reserve or app that character. If a cast is capped, or the cap for Character Versions is met, an app in the wait queue also reserves the next slot available.

Reserves: A reserve also reserves cast, character version, or player slots. Reserves last 7 days.

CHARACTER TERMS

Not sure what to put in the "Canon, AU, CRAU, Canon OC, or OC?" section on the app below? the Here is an explanation of character terms to choose from on the app.

Canon: This is a fandom/canon character pulled directly from the piece of media they're in. If someone were to play Spider-Man directly from the comics he would be a canon character from the canon universe he exists in.

AU: Alternate universe. This is a fandom/canon character with an altered personal history, introducing changes that effect who the character is. If you were to play a version of Superman who never met Lois Lane and it wasn't a take from any of the comics, that would be an alternate universe version of Superman. This is not an alternate version of the character from existing media. So Superman from the comics and Superman from the live-action movies both count as Canon, not AU.

Canon OC: An original character based on a pre-existing piece of media. This can be a tabletop character based on a tabletop game system. It can also be an OC from a pre-existing piece of media, like a completely original Pokemon trainer from Pokemon.

OC: An original character. This is a completely original character that comes from a completely original world, rather than using another canon as their point of origin.

CRAU: This term is one that attaches to the other character types rather than standing alone. A CRAU is a version of any type of character that was previously in another RP, and is carrying over their memories of the old game. They are able to remember their CR (Character relationships) from the old game but must follow this game's rules about the character mentioning it. They are altered from their original form. Usually these characters started as their initial character type and then changed by gaining experience from the past RP.

CRAU overlaps with the other character types, because every type of character can potentially be brought over from another RP. In that case, the player should list the initial character type and that they are also CRAU. For instance, if I were to bring Scooby Doo from another RP with his memories of that game, I would list him as Canon/CRAU. If I brought an OC from a past game, I would list OC/CRAU. If a character started as an AU in a past game, I'd list a character as AU/CRAU.

CRAUs can only have history from up to 1 past game, no more than that.

SITUATIONAL APP CLOSURES

Both new player and current player apps may close on occasion due to RL holidays, mods going on vacation, and other mitigating circumstances. They may also be closed sometimes during particularly complicated gamewide plots that would create difficulties for people introing characters. These closures will be temporary.

APP RULES

Before Apping, please visit both the PLAYABLE CHARACTERS and POWERS pages to make sure your character is appable and to figure out their powers.

You may app as many characters at a time that you want to play, as long as they don't exceed your 4 character slots.

If you only have one character and you're swapping them out for another, please note on your app and your drop post that you're swapping out so we don't think you're giving up your player slot.

If you app for multiple characters from the same canon they must not have a lot of direct involvement (ie they can't be close siblings or SOs or anything like that).

Apps are judged for that character as first come, first served.

Apps are not screened at this game.

App samples don't have an age limit. They don't have to be from within a certain number of years. Use any app samples from any time in the past.

Please post your app as all comments instead of as a link to a post. Multiple comments are fine.

In the subject of your app comment, please put "NEW PLAYER APP" or "CURRENT PLAYER APP" before the character's name and canon.

CHARACTER SUMMARY

This game requires no personality and no history, just a character summary like you might give in a profile, to give a sense of the character. This can even be under 100 words if it's descriptive enough.

Example: Superman is an alien who was sent to Earth by his parents as a baby to survive their dying planet. His spaceship was found by a farm couple in Kansas, who raised him to be kind, honest, brave, and compassionate. He works as a journalist in his secret identity, targeting the corrupt. Granted powers by the light of Earth's sun, he fights villains and other threats as a superhero to protect people, standing for truth and justice.

He feels a weight on his shoulders when it comes to Earth's protection, feeling responsible to the world and sometimes struggling internally with how to deal with the evil he grapples with. Other superheroes regard him as a team player and an example to follow. To the public, he's a symbol of a hope; people know that calling out the name "Superman" means he'll try to reach them when they need him most.

SUITABILITY

The game has a sci fi/horror setting, with lots of potentially intense survival horror. While there will be plots that are more sci fi than horror, and plots on missions that are neither sci fi or horror, allowing for respites from traumatizing things, characters need to be able to handle the stress of the setting.

Keep in mind that if a character is not suited to a stressful horror and action setting, or if a character is aged 12-15, you will have to work extra hard to justify how they can function in the game as an equal (or learn how to quickly). Please answer all of the following.

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

(Answer here.)

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

(Answer here.)

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

(Answer here.)

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

(Answer here.)

⌲ Are they used to cooperating with others? If they're not, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

(Answer here.)

⌲ If your character is aged 12-15, do they have skills, resilience, and experience from their canon setting that would allow them to survive without too much reliance on others? Can they realistically keep up with the adults?

(N/A if it doesn't apply.)

⌲ Given this is a gritty sci-fi setting where killing is common in the genre, and there are OOC communication, permissions, and opt-out options to avoid it happening in a thread with your character, do you feel your character would be unplayable if others in the group killed sentient enemies, even if your character isn't present for it?

(Answer here.)

POWER SELECTION

Please pick either a combination of (1) primary and (1) secondary NERF, (1) primary NERF or (1) secondary NERF if only going for one, (2) secondary NERFs, or No Powers.

ABILITIES

Please list any abilities independent of any meta-powers or magic here. Martial arts, wilderness survival, diplomacy skills, etc. The mods just want to know this for plot-running in the future.

WRITING SAMPLES

Please link a thread from any source, whether a past game thread, a tdm thread, or even a meme thread, as long you were not playing a heavily altered version of the character. This sample must demonstrate character voice and have at least enough writing to judge your spelling and grammar. (So memes like tfln may possibly not qualify if posts are too brief.) If one sample would only partially work, you may list multiple samples. Samples that provide a blend of dialogue and prose or actionspam would be most preferred.

If you have no samples, you can write one but base it on anything, like the character's reaction to being dumped out of their medical tank upon intro, or a sample of a first open log or network post.

ADDITIONAL INFO

Personal Belonging: Propose the (1) personal belonging that Ishtar allows for the character to keep on hand for sentimental reasons, for mod approval. Weapons are not allowed. Clothing must only be 1 article of clothing.

Extras: Any extra info, requests, or concerns, you think it's important to include. For instance, you can use this space to ask the mods if certain animal companions can be brought into the game with the character.

WAIT TIME

Please give the mods 5 days to respond.

For new player apps that are submitted after the cut off for the player cap to be filled, we cannot give estimates on how long it will take to get into the game, as this depends on any natural drops that happen. However, when a player slot opens, we will ask the player if they're still interested in the game and process the app.

For new players, we consider a new player slot reserved by an app until the entire review process is over, so if we ask for revisions, your slot is still reserved until the mods make their final judgement of the app. However, if we ask for revisions, you will have 2 days to respond. After that, you'll forfeit the player slot reserved by your app and we'll move on to the next app.

Character Name: Little Cato
Fandom: Final Space
Character Journal: [personal profile] furtitude
Character Type: Canon character
CRAU History: N/A
Canon point: At the end of the S3 finale, as Invictus emerges into normal space
Age: Technically 74, but mentally and physically 14
PB: N/A

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Lil C is an alien called a Ventrexian, and comes from a rough-and-tumble sci-fi future, part of a ragtag crew of criminals, outcasts, and oddballs, who have been drawn together against an evil interplanetary dictator, Lord Commander, and the cosmic evils he's allied with. His crew has tried to stop the threat of "Final Space," the very last realm of existence where time and space end, the place where the evil eldritch giants, the Titans, and a giant cosmic Big Bad named Invictus dwell.

The group has engaged in heists, fire fights, and prison break outs a-plenty in their quest to save their dimension from the threats of Final Space, suffering many pyrrhic victories along the way.

Little Cato is a feisty and mostly fearless teenager. High energy, often struggling between hope and cynicism, he can vacillate between aggro, sarcastic, or sweet and kind. Underneath this, however, is a deep vein of sadness and hidden trauma. He's dealt with a long line of tragedies, starting with being imprisoned as a hostage for 3 years by Lord Commander, multiple incidences of somehow losing his father, losing friends, and being trapped alone in a pocket dimension for 60 years until he went insane.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Little Cato is used to an extremely horrifying and high stress environment back home, where he's dealt with abuse, imprisonment, endless amounts of death, grief, cosmic horrors, and even having to kill zombie versions of his own adopted father. He'll be extremely stressed in the setting but is used to high stress environments that are about as equally stressful and horrifying - if not more so, given he sometimes deals with cosmic nightmares that can crush whole planets or that have to be imprisoned with black holes. Compared to characters that aren't used to it he'll likely be one of the cooler heads and incredibly capable for his age.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

I'd like to have the kid McFreakin' lose it but in a way that's healthy for him. At this point, he's spent a huge portion of his life dealing with an unending stream of bullshit with barely any break, even having to live alone for 60 years until he went insane, a situation that simply caused a state of hallucinatory delusion and a fugue of emotional pain rather than helping him mature or process anything.

He tends to deep six as much trauma as he can but something's gotta give. The times he's dealt with his emotions and cried have been healthy for him and allowed him to genuinely process and move on, but he's only done it for a few situations. He hasn't really sat down and processed Lord Commander's treatment of him, the sheer horror of his situation back home, or his time alone in the time shard.

Sometimes you have to break down a little to build yourself back up.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

He'll be pretty comfortable with them, thinking they're cool. The kid won't be too jazzed at the impingement on his bodily autonomy but will be super psyched to be a living weapon, as he has a tendency towards violence and aggression at times, in true cat-like fashion. He'll just wish he'd had a chance to choose it and be pissed it was chosen for him.

He will, however, be an idiot and keep risking overuse effects, though he'll be smart enough to dial it back before hitting the long-term ones.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Yes, the kid is used to extreme stress and fear, including dealing with straight up horror and even cosmic horror scenarios. While I want him to get broken down a little, he'll be able to push through any negative states to stay competent in fights through sheer force of will, regardless of his mental state. He's extremely good at picking himself up off the mat in ways a survival horror protag often needs to do.

He's also absolutely hypercompetent, not just for his age but for a sci-fi protag in general. He's an extremely skilled fighter with weapons and as a hand-to-hand combatant, an incredible shot with a gun (even nailing head shots while flipping around a fight upside down), a skilled hacker, an extremely sharp pilot, and a solid engineer. He's very strong (at least for his age) and extremely athletic and acrobatic.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

He's used to working with a crew in dangerous and high stress situations and will be extremely cooperative, though there may have to be an occasion here and there where someone with more sense has to scruff him before he does something risky to himself. Still, for the most part he's good at coordinating with other people, watching their backs, and collaborative problem-solving. Alongside trying to trouble-shoot immediate issues, he's very often seen trying to figure out how to solve long-term problems with his crew.

⌲ If your character is aged 12-15, do they have skills, resilience, and experience from their canon setting that would allow them to survive without too much reliance on others? Can they realistically keep up with the adults?

Yes, he regularly keeps up with adults in his canon, on a crew that is all largely pretty competent, where everyone is a strong combatant. His situation back home has been bad enough that there's a lot he was forced to jump into with the adults and they couldn't really shield him from much of it due to threats to their lives and the universe. He's got lots of sci-fi canon skills, is well-trained to fight by his father. He's also resilient to an insane degree considering the trauma congo line that is his life, somehow scraping together sanity despite absolutely horrific situations, including three years of imprisonment and abuse.

I'm OOCly fine with it when working with permissions and all that. ICly, he's pretty comfortable with killing and unless someone is killing total innocents, if it's kept to killing people attacking the group, he'll be fine with it. Even then there's ways to avoid him being present.

POWER SELECTION

Primary NERF: Blade ARC
Secondary NERF: Stealth ARC

ABILITIES

Athleticism: Little Cato's strength, senses, and acrobatics will be dialed back away from alien, but he's definitely close to comic book badass normal levels of human acrobatics. He's seen in canon casually flipping around during firefights, clinging to surfaces with his claws, and using his prehensile tail to dangle upside down. He'll still have these acrobatic abilities at the highest human extremes, and is just generally extremely athletic. He was even the planetary youth champion of a sport that involves flipping around and trying not to get dismembered.

Combat: Little Cato has been heavily trained in hand to hand almost since he could walk, and is a crack shot with a gun, able to pick off head shots while flipping upside down in the air. Some previews from the upcoming graphic novel seem to imply he has experience with using a sword as well, though I'm handwaving he's less good at bladed weapons.

Hacking/Engineering: He's a fantastic hacker, using the gauntlet on his armband to wirelessly hack nearby computers. Without his gauntlet, he'll find handheld computers to do this in the game setting. He's moderately good at some basic engineering and ship maintenance.

Pilot: He's an excellent pilot for his age.

Personal Belonging: His helmet, which his Enki suit will morph his Enki suit's helmet around and provide air to. It won't have the ability to spring a spacesuit with air supply, won't really offer much in the way of extra protection. It's more just sentimental.

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Dr. Ian Malcolm
Fandom: Jurassic Park
Character Journal: [personal profile] whethertheyshould
Character Type: Canon character
Canon point: The end of the first movie, when the helicopter is taking them away from Isla Nublar.
Age: 39

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Ian Malcolm is one of the world's foremost experts on Chaos Theory. He's known for his 'rockstar' demeanor, often laughing brashly when others would expect him to be more decorous, and flirting with women he finds interesting during events such as the tour of Jurassic Park that takes place in the movie he's from. He was contacted by Donald Gennaro, a lawyer representing the company's investors, over concerns about John Hammond’s decision to use his dinosaur genetic research to build an amusement park. Gennaro expected Malcolm to be able to probe into and expose shortcomings of the park’s security systems, among other possible problems. Genarro ends up being won over by Hammond and the resurrected dinosaurs on the island, but Malcolm warns them the park is destined to fail. "Life finds a way," he tells them.

That very day his prognostication comes true when the park security systems are sabotaged and the tyrannosaurus rex breaks out of its paddock. Malcolm is a parent himself, and feels deeply that he needs to intervene when the children are in danger. In an attempt to rescue the children in the other tour car, Malcolm leads the T-rex away, but is attacked by the creature. He spends the rest of the movie lying on a table with a tourniquet on his injury.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Malcolm is familiar with fighting for one's life in the face of sci-fi creatures attacking, and is brash about making predictions about how a situation will turn out. He's fit enough to fend for himself in various survival situations.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

Malcolm will be protective of others and seek leadership in any teams that form. He will want to protect anyoe who seems helpless in any capacity, and since he will have the medical NERF, he's going to keep an eye out for anyone in physical distress during missions.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

He's going to be unhappy they're present, but he knows better than to try to physically remove them or anything.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Although Malcolm is an academic, he's tough in survival situations and will do his best to stick through anything the setting throws at him while helping anyone else that needs intervention.

⌲Are they used to cooperating with others? If they're not, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

Malcolm is a professor and is used to helping guide people through situations that are perplexing them. He knows how to take charge should the situation call for it.

⌲ If your character is aged 12-15, do they have skills, resilience, and experience from their canon setting that would allow them to survive without too much reliance on others? Can they realistically keep up with the adults?

N/a

⌲ Given this is a gritty sci-fi setting where killing is common in the genre, and there are OOC communication, permissions, and opt-out options to avoid it happening in a thread with your character, do you feel your character would be unplayable if others in the group killed sentient enemies, even if your character isn't present for it?

OOC: I prefer warnings for extreme descriptions of gore, but should have no trouble with it OOCly.

IC: I think Malcolm will have moral qualms with it but will not become unplayable.

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Bradward Boimler
Fandom: Star Trek (Lower Decks)
Character Journal: [personal profile] antigravboy
Character Type: Canon Character + CRAU
CRAU History: [community profile] longestnight
Canon point: Walking through the portal at the end of Strange New Worlds: Those Old Scientists
Age: Not given but his best friend Mariner has said he had a quarter-life crisis, and he's had only a short time serving on the Cerritos so far. I'll put him at 27.
PB: He's played by Jack Quaid in both cartoon and live action.

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Boimler is from a utopian space future, where humanity has reached for the stars and formed an interplanetary alliance with many other species. As an officer in Starfleet, he's dedicated his life to boldly going out into space in the spirit of science, diplomacy, and exploration. Currently, he's an ensign getting experience on the USS Cerritos, a support ship that's a workhorse in the fleet, engaging in second contacts and other less glamorous tasks than the ones given to exploratory vessels. However, despite being a support ship, the Cerritos is legendary among the California class of ships, due to facing several threats and challenges worthy of a capital ship while being far less equipped.

Boimler has grown and thrived in this environment, evolving from a brown-noser only worried about promotion to an earnest and sincere officer who exemplifies the optimistic ideals of the Federation. While he still has his moments of being too concerned about praise, getting anxious, overthinking things, and twisting himself into knots, he's also altruistic, dutiful, sincere, and brave (even while shrieking at the top of his lungs). He's also sometimes very clever, finding outside-the-box solutions to problems.

In his CRAU game, [community profile] longestnight he's faced a new hurdle due to a reality-altering construct creating a bunch of Borg drones. They were able to partially assimilate Boimler, before a crewmate found a cure to the nanoprobes in his body, saving him from mentally being subsumed into their collective. Despite the fact he was saved, he still has hang ups about the machinery shoved into his body and the fact his species now reads as Borg to Starfleet tricorders. There's a stigma in the Federation about ex-Borg that he's afraid to face when he returns home and he feels like part of his humanity has been stolen away.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Screaming. Lots of screaming. Boimler has a very loud shriek and he's not afraid to let everyone else hear it when he's in danger. However, even while shrieking, he knows how to push fear aside to do what needs to be done. He'll ultimately respond to the situation by engaging in his duty as a Starfleet officer and trying to help the people around him, but he'll be stressed and terrified the entire time.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

I'd like to play with the fact he's already dealing with his body being transformed against his will, affecting his sense of personhood. I'd like to keep following that angle with the NERFs making it worse. I'd also like to continue developing him as a Starfleet officer, getting more altruistic and competent as he goes, despite the terror of the situation.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

He'll try to use them as little as possible due to already disliking how his body has been changed. They'll definitely be something he's uncomfortable with.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

He has some really handy sci fi techie skills because while he's command track, every Starfleet officer needs some science and engineering skills. Those will be useful in the setting. He's also somewhat competent with a sword (due to wanting to be a "Sword Guy" like Hikaru Sulu) and may someday be coaxed into using a gun in lieu of a phaser (though he'll struggle with how violent it is.) He can also be clever in a conflict and has a good sense of tactics at times. As time goes on, he'll also likely develop more leadership skills, especially if I canon update him to after his promotion to lieutenant or just have his development mirror canon.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

Starfleet officers are trained to cooperate with others, and are even shown cooperating with non-officers in conflicts (such as civilian scientists.) Boimler has evolved to cooperate well with others and his instinct is to do work communally.

ICly he's going to have major issues with it at times but OOCly I'm fine with the conflict from that.

POWER SELECTION

Primary: Impact ARC - He'll likely put more emphasis on shielding than attack.

Secondary: Fabricator ARC

ABILITIES

The usual Starfleet background of solid future science/engineering knowledge, though he's not an engineer so that isn't as good as an engineer's would be. Still, his tech skills are pretty solid. Diplomacy (he once talked some Ferengi out of some bullshit by giving them a presentation on a way they could make more profit). Really good with memorization of all the Starfleet protocol/his Starfleet education, etc. and he'll likely start memorizing as much useful info about the setting that he can. Can fight with a sword. Solid with a phaser and can maybe learn another weapon. Plays violin like...okay.

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Here's your obligatory 40k flavor text:
It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries The Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the Master of Mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in his name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.
Mira is a wildcard both in-universe and out—the dialog avoids pronouns in an attempt to make her reveal as a worringly young woman as much a surprise to the player as it is to the Space Marine POV character.

She's from Cadia, a planet that's basically Ancient Sparta if it had been built on a literal portal to Hell. The world is under constant attack by the forces, physical and metaphysical, pouring out of that portal, and because the Imperium only knows one way to solve problems, all Cadians are trained as soldiers from birth, conscripted into the Guard as young teenagers, and by adulthood, every Cadian qualifies as an elite shock trooper. Unfortunately for Cadians, the Imperium's basic military strategy is to blindly throw Guard units at anything it doesn't like until whatever that thing is stops moving, while simultaneously underequipping said units so badly that tabletop players call their armor and guns "cardboard" and "flashlights."

Deployed to a world far from Cadia, Mira's Guard regiment was almost wiped out by a superior force, leaving her, likely the most junior officer in the regiment, in command of what remained of the Imperial Guard in that solar system. The fiasco almost broke even the legendary Cadian morale, but Mira, wildcard that she is, turned out to be an extraordinary leader, transforming certain annihilation into a costly but successful holding action. Her reward for this will be to get sent to do it over and over again for the rest of her life.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Mira will only be horrified by the parts that don't bother anyone else (what do you mean you don't worship the God-Emperor?!?), because in Warhammer they raise 'em wrong. Being sent to weird, bad places by an arbitrary authority to prosecute an endless, senseless war without having the information or equipment to do it properly is normal for her.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

Become at least 25% less horrid? Not try to murder non-humans on sight? Stop being terrified the computer will explode if she doesn't tell it it's pretty first?

By young adulthood, Mira's confronted more really awful things than other canons throw at you in a lifetime, but the only coping method the Imperium allows is "suck it up, buttercup." I honestly do not think the game will run long enough for her to even admit she's got capital-T Trauma. Her experiences are completely normative for her culture, and having seen plenty of people snap under pressure, she knows she's nowhere near that. Any character development she'll do is likely to be in terms of relating to others rather than unpicking the mess that is a 40k psyche. Mira's unusually warm and empathetic for a Guard officer (damning with faint praise, cough), and she'll make carve-outs in her bigotry for people she ends up liking despite herself. With counter-examples right there in front of her, she can probably be talked down from some of the Imperium's absolutist anti-basically-everything stances. She'll never be Starfleet material, but she's capable of far more decency than the Imperium allows.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

n/a, we're going Nightmare Mode

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Frankly, those are about the only skills she has. Grim darkness, far future, only war, that kinda thing.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

The "HERESY! [murders everything]" joke is true for some of the characters in Warhammer, but Mira's not a fanatic and also not stupid. She won't make herself a pariah when it's clear her perspective puts her in the distinct minority. Also, AIs are high on the taboo list, and unlike everything else the Imperium hates, she hasn't got any exposure to them to breed contempt, so most of her ire will be directed at Ishtar.

My siblings in the God-Emperor, she's a Warhammer 40,000 character.

POWER SELECTION

No powers. Mira doesn't need a nervous breakdown from being stuffed even more full of unsanctioned tech. Also she'd be very sad if they found cool guns and she couldn't use them.

ABILITIES

"Casual 10k before breakfast" levels of physical fitness
Marksmanship
Melee (esp bladed weapons)
Hand-to-hand
Military tactics (esp urban & counter-insurgency)
Command/leadership (though she'll have to adapt to non-Warhammer expectations of how you run an army if she wants it to work on most people)
Survival
Discipline/willpower (Cadia is synonymous with military discipline)

She's at least done the summer internship version of every Warhammer army job, but is a light infantry generalist and should only be, say, driving a tank if no actual tank driver is available.

Character Name: Dysthymia ("Dys")
Fandom: I Was A Teenage Exocolonist
Character Journal: [personal profile] dysappear
Character Type: Canon character
CRAU History: N/A
Canon point: Just before setting the bomb to sabotage the colony in Wet Season of the 18th year
Age: 17
PB: N/A

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Dys is one of several children born on a spaceship midway through its one-way twenty year journey to the planet Vertumna IV, along with his twin sister, Tangent. They were born to a single mom who worked as the ship's counselor and committed suicide when they were very young, leaving them to be raised communally with the rest of the ship's kids. The ship finally reached its destination when they were nine, and they spent their adolescence growing up on an alien planet amid the colony's struggles to survive and establish itself.

Dys was always the loner of his generation. The other kids tended to find him weird and sullen, and he was sometimes bullied for it. While he and his sister were close when they were little, they grew apart as they grew up due to a clash of personalities and priorities, exacerbated by the colony's constant comparison of the two of them – usually negatively on Dys' part, as Tangent was a natural genius who immediately found a place for herself among the colony's scientists and engineers. As he was genetically augmented before birth to have no sense of fear, Dys quickly took to sneaking out to explore the colony's surroundings, and while he initially hated it in all his pre-preteen angst, he quickly came to love the wild, untamed nature of the planet. He eventually found a niche for himself once he was old enough to formally join the surveyors, aiding with foraging and exploration and reveling in the alone time.

At some point in his early years on Vertumna, Dys became the first person in the colony to make contact with sentient alien life when he met Sym, an alien known as a Gardener and tasked with maintaining the planet. Dys fell quickly for both Sym and the Gardeners as a whole, enamored with their innate connection with the planet. He'd spent his whole childhood feeling like an outcast, never fitting in among his peers or with humans in general, so he was naturally drawn to this alien race and their deep ties to the planet itself and all life on it. And while Sym seemed fascinated by and fond of humans in general, the Gardeners as a whole viewed the human colony more as an invasive species to be purged, sending more and more threats in an attempt to eliminate them. In Dys' late teens, one of the other Gardeners made him an offer – sabotage the colony during the next attack, and in exchange he could become a Gardener himself. And despite the risk to everyone he'd ever known, his own twin sister included, Dys accepted the deal.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Dys will initially be frustrated and irritated to have been snatched away to a whole new world right when he was about to secure a proper place for himself on his old one, but he'll do quite well here naturally between his expertise as an explorer and his literal fearlessness. The unfamiliarity of everything will likely eventually become an appealing novelty, and he may even eventually find appreciation for the new environment despite all the stressors.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

I'd like for Dys to manage to build some actual relationships with others, a task which will hopefully come easier in this environment with more non-humans around and a mechanic that won't let him just run off on his own immediately.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

The technological nature of the implants might be a little unpleasant to Dys at first, but as willing as he is to abandon his humanity and join an alien race, he'll likely eventually embrace the whole "alien physical modifications" thing.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Perhaps all Dys does have going for him is the mentality and skills to survive in an alien environment.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

While he's a natural loner, he's capable of working with others as needed (if reluctantly at times). He just might be an absolute teenager about it.

⌲ If your character is aged 12-15, do they have skills, resilience, and experience from their canon setting that would allow them to survive without too much reliance on others? Can they realistically keep up with the adults?

N/A

Personal Belonging:
His holopalm – a small device embedded in the palm of the hand and powered by the body's heat and electrical charge, with more or less the same features as your average smartphone (though it can project three-dimensional images instead of just 2D ones, and it can also function as a makeshift defibrillator in an emergency by discharging all its battery at once). With no access to the holonet here, it's limited similarly to how a smartphone would be without internet – flashlight, notepad, calculator, some games and saved media that don't require a connection, etc. are still functional, but it can't access the holonet's databases of information and media or communicate at all. It's connected to an internally implanted set of headphones called a hearspeak to listen to audio without having to put it on speakerpalm.

Whoops, totally missed that extra question, my bad!

While Dys is definitely against senseless killing, he understands killing to survive and wouldn't blame anyone for doing what they had to to defend themselves. He could potentially make a fuss if someone was getting crazy unnecessarily trigger-happy, but it honestly depends on how much he ends up viewing all the horrors here as just part of the natural order of things, and I don't think coming down on the opposite side of a conflict would make him unplayable for him.

Fandom: Stephen King's The Stand

Character Type: Canon: I play him from the extended edition book with original edition dates; the plague drops in July 1980. I also use details from the 2020 miniseries, such as his background being from El Salvador and him knowing ASL.
Canon point: At the point of his death
Age: 22
PB: Despite playing him from the book, I use his 2020 miniseries actor as a PB

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Nick is a deaf-mute drifter who travels the country on foot, picking up odd jobs in small towns he ends up in. He's strong because he often works as a day laborer and spends so much time walking. He's kind and generous, offering grace to the men who beat him up for his money and his disability when he makes his way to Shoyo, Arkansas. When the plague begins killing most of the people around him, Nick is even willing to let the ringleader of the crime out of the county jail, something he has the power to do because the sheriff deputized him when all of his deputies became ill.

After most of the population dies, he begins acting as a leader amonst the group of people he encouters as he continues to travel west to Nebraska, led by mysterious premonitial dreams of an old woman named Mother Abagail. The first person he meets is a mentally disabled man named Tom Cullen, and despite their difficulties communicating (because Tom can't read or sign), they become best friends. He often carries a notebook around to communicate with those who don't know ASL.

When the followers of Mother Abagail settle in Boulder, Colorado, he is elected to the committee that leads the city and attends the meetings weekly. He feels humbled to have been made a part of the committee, and helps make several important decisions, including choosing to send Tom as a spy to the Dark Man's doman in Las Vegas.

The day of his death, when Nadine had planted a bomb in the closet where the committee was to meet, he has a psychic impression that the bomb is there and rushes to find it. However, he's too late and is killed by its detonation.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Nick will not be surprised he's been thrown into the mix of another horrifiying setting. The plague that killed off most of humanity in his canon was undescriminating; it killed off 99% of humanity, leaving Nick in a small town with no other survivors.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

I hope for Nick to gain another position of trust amongst the other denizens of the game, similar to what he'd gained in canon.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

He will be displeased to have something implanted in his body, but he will resign himself to their presence. The tech is far advanced to anything that would have been available in 1980 when he died, so he'll be curious about exploring how it works over time, but doesn't really have the skills (beyond mechanical skills) to explore more.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Yes, Nick is strong and capable after spending years as a drifting laborer. He's used to finding his way when he's lost and endearing himself to others.

⌲ Are they used to cooperating with others? If they're not, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

He is used to cooperating with others and making strategic plans when the situation calls for it. When he chose to send Tom as a spy to the Dark Man's side, for example, he was taking into account that the Dark Man can read minds. He was making a shrewd calculation that the Dark Man would have trouble connecting to Tom's mind because of his disability.

IC: I prefer warnings for extreme descriptions of gore, but should have no trouble with it OOCly.

OOC: Nick will be sad that this is necessary, but he's a realist about such things. He was willing to send Tom, a mentally disabled man, as a spy into Randall Flagg's city because he suspects Flagg wouldn't be able to use his powers to look into Tom's mind. He knew this may have resulted in Tom's death.

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Therion
Fandom: Octopath Traveler
Character Journal: [personal profile] thatsthat
Character Type: canon
CRAU History: -
Canon point: Chapter 4 of his route, after arriving at Northreach but before the final confrontation with Darius.
Age: 22
PB: -

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Therion is a thief, and a good one. The whisper network in Orsterra speaks highly of him, but most know him only by reputation, not by face, and that's exactly how he prefers it; having grown up an orphan on the streets and having been betrayed and nearly murdered by his partner and best friend when he was a teenager has left him with serious trust issues and a reluctance to put his faith in anything beyond his own skills.

However, the cold front he habitually puts on has been wearing down, thanks to some involuntary adventures with a ragtag band of JRPG heroes. He's still sarcastic, reluctant to discuss his feelings, and always has one eye on the door, but he's admitted to himself that sometimes taking the risk of being hurt again is worth the connections with other people, and he's not particularly proud of how he's turned out...though that's not enough to turn him away from his life of larceny, mind.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

He's practical enough to put his feelings in lockdown and put survival first. Therion is pretty experienced at compartmentalizing when faced with mortal peril and nasty things, even if his canon doesn't work up to quite this level of horror.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

He was just starting to warm up to the idea of opening up a little bit and letting some people in the front door, and now he's got to start over with a new crowd, but I want him to not just accept the idea of trusting people, but actually start doing it again.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

Mild disgust loses to cold utilitarianism every time. He certainly doesn't like the idea, but he won't have too much trouble swallowing that and using them when he's in a bind.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Avoid threats and live to fight another day is his primary MO! He's great at sneaking, okay at fighting, and well aware of his own limitations, so this won't be a problem.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

At his canon point, he's accepted the idea of needing other people, even if he's terribly out of practice with it, so he should be able to get used to it as time goes on.

⌲ If your character is aged 12-15, do they have skills, resilience, and experience from their canon setting that would allow them to survive without too much reliance on others? Can they realistically keep up with the adults?

Nah. He is easily one of the darkest members of his canon party, in terms of what he's willing to accept to get by. He'd rather avoid the situation if he can, but if you gotta shank a dude, you gotta shank a dude, and he's not going to begrudge anyone else what they do to survive.

POWER SELECTION

Two secondaries: stealth and psionic.

ABILITIES

He's an excellent sneak and pickpocket, good at lying low and eavesdropping, and has been mentioned to be a decent actor (a number of his heists begin with disguise and bluffing his way in, rather than breaking and entering). He's a decent fighter, not the top tier of physical combatants in his canon, but running second to the ones who are; his preferred weapons are knives, but he's also proficient with a sword, and since OT has a job system he can be set up with other weapons with little trouble. His combat style is very much the fast and evasive sort.

Personal Belonging: The Fool's Bangle. It's basically half a manacle with a single chain link hanging from it, and it's covered in runes and spelled to be impossible to remove without the key. In Orsterra, it's considered a mark of shame among thieves, a sign that you got caught; Therion's plot begins with an older, more experienced ex-thief pulling one over on him and slapping him with it, then using that as leverage to get him to help House Ravus recover some lost artifacts. In short, it is embarrassing as hell.

Character Name: Brainiac 5, Querl Dox, Brainy (in order of how well you have to know him to call him that)
Fandom: DC Comics (Earth-247)
Character Journal: [personal profile] tears_of_logic
Character Type: Canon
CRAU History: N/A
Canon point: The Legion 31.
Age: About 19. Coluans have a lifespan at least 3x that of Terrans, but their youth seems to follow the same trajectory. He's intellectually mature for his age and perhaps still a little socially immature - not in the sense of fart jokes, just that he's only had a few years of real social interactions.
PB: I may at some point use Jesse Rath, if needed, but he's got oodles of art

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Querl Dox is a Coluan who is the 5th in the genetic line to make use of the title "Brainiac." He is the first of the line that has chosen to use his abilities for good and altruistic purposes. Rejected by his mother at birth, Querl was raised by bureaucratic Coluan scientists via nanny-bots with the goal of making this Brainaic a tool for the betterment of Colu.

Fortunately, his reinterpretation of the scientific method to consider testing to the point of critical failure (read: explosions) de rigeuer made him an expensive project to maintain and his stubbornness meant that he was unwilling to bend to their needs. The Coluans actually considered selling him but didn't want to run afoul of their treaties and politics, so they gave him away to R.J. Brande, space industrialist/capitalist/philanthropist and the first person to show Querl any understanding or kindness.

Eventually, Querl is drafted onto Brand's new Legion of Superheroes, and his work with the team begins first as just "this is the latest lab for my experiments" and loyalty to Mr. Brande, but grows into the role of superhero, largely due to his interactions with other Legionnaires and the impact that they have on him, over and over again. He puts tremendous pressure on himself to keep those around him safe - impossible because it's as if they deliberately instigate problems with their stupidity - and fights the hardest when people are utilizing their comparative power to manipulate, control and harm those that they perceive as lesser life forms, as his predecessors did.

He has a team now. Friends, even if he rarely uses the word aloud. If he can learn to care (and care deeply) with a brain that is orders of magnitude above theirs, they should be able to do so. There's a clear path to a happy universe if everyone else would shut up and do the right thing. Until then, let's go, Legionnaires.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

It's Wednesday. LOSH is full of horror-style baddies and situations, probably because it's aiming for a different feel and scope from the traditional rogues gallery books. As to the unfamiliarity, similar situation there as well. This isn't the first time that Brainy's been trapped somewhere new. It's at least the 3rd, if you count "the timestream" as a place. It's not ideal, and it will compound his stress because he will feel that he's the only one capable of solving it, but he'll manage.

He'll take it out on those around him a little because he's going to be extra surly.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

I am the WORST at coming into games with a long term plan. I'm just hoping to have a good time with friends, while Brainy has a Very Not Good Time.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

He'll be furious about it. It would be different if the NERFs were responsibly and ethically designed and if they'd gotten his consent before implantation procedure commenced. However, they didn't. Instead, it's a forced procedure with minimal impact and what impact it has could easily be replicated by other means. If they have the technology and materials to produce nanites on this scale, he could have the entire crew kitted with telepathic earplugs and omnicomms within a week if they gave him limited access. Three days, albeit with a 30% chance of a minor, semi-contained fulmination.

They're not designed properly for the average bipedal carbon-based sentient being - their victim of choice. The base of the spinal column for access to language and processing centers? You must be joking. A functional waste. It's not even a good deterrent, having been placed in the spine. The brainstem, surely, would have prevented removal just as neatly, reduced transmission times, and brought the device closer to more of a humanoid's electrical synapses. Sloppy, rushed, and badly conceived. A scientific disgrace.

When he fully grasps the meaning of the fabricator arc, Brainy will run the risk of prolonged overuse in the name of helping others.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

In short, yes. Brainy's new to choosing to adapt; he spent the first 15 years of his life adapting only at the prodding of others, but he can't deny that the proactive adaptation he's undergone since joining the Legion has brought him greater success in interacting with others. He won't even deny that it's bettered his life.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

He's used to collaboration on a team. Collaboration doesn't mean he'll blindly accept someone else's leadership nor does it mean that he'll stop trying to investigate how/why they really were brought here, but working together won't be an issue for him, even if some of the others may be xenophobic nassheads.

Unplayable, no. Uncomfortable, yes, but I know what I'm signing up for in this. Legionnaires are prohibited from killing except in self-defense or as the only means of defending other sentient beings, and he takes it very seriously due to his family history. Case in point, the first thing he did when he saw the infected was ask Ishtar if they could be kept alive until such time as a cure was available. It's not an idle question; he wants to understand the full weight of his decisions and actions.

ABILITIES

12th level intellect. For comparison, the entirety of the Earth's population equates to a 6 on this scale. He's several orders of magnitude above the average Coluan, and outside of Brainiacs, the scale stops at 6. He's not so much a genius but the genius of his time, if you ask him. Under this, I'm placing a huge umbrella for theoretical and practical science, including general research skills and medical skills. His expertise largely focuses on electronic engineering (to use modern terms), software including AI, physics, mathematics, etc, but that's the equivalent to saying that Deion Sanders was just an expert in football, when he also had a MLB career. Brainy's also produced huge medical feats, like curing the Daxamite genetic susceptibility to fatal lead poisoning. In general, if it's not game-breaking, he'll probably have some to complete understanding of a scientific issue. If I have any fear of it being game-breaking, I'll check with the mods first.

Don't ask him about the humanities though. He's never read for fun in his life. Holovids are also a waste of time.

Also, he's limited by a lack of creativity and hyperfocus on the desired results of the experiment. He doesn't set out to create the most incredible ice cream flavour because a concept wanders into his mind. He identifies problems and solves them.

Resistance/Defence against telepathy Brainy has 12 separate trains of thought running at all times and has total control of all of them. The Coluan mind is dangerous for most telepaths to do more than skim the absolute surface of, even if they're using techological assistance.

Fighting skills The Legionnaires all undergo training. He is not on par with someone whose membership is entirely fighting-based (looking at you, Karate Kid), but he has learned to defend himself adequately for someone of his stature. He's inclined to more of a soft arts style, using his knowledge of physics and good spatial awareness to take use his opponents' momentum as a weapon against them.

He will not be in the middle to upper echelon in this kind of game. Good for the average humanoid. A weak link in prowess, but topnotch at identifying weaknesses and executing plans.

Diplomacy skills HA. Next.

Survival skills Not terrible, but based on the 30th century's planets, their climates, and general strategizing for worst-case scenarios. He's been stranded in various situations; he has taken the time to learn how to do things like purify water, survive the known extreme climates, and identify edible plantlife on all known planets. Half of that won't apply, but again: better than the average sentient.

Absolutely. I get that the goal of the NERF/ARC paradigm is in part parity and have no problem helping comic book science up why those attacks work when others don't.

Character Name: (Hologram) Kathryn Janeway
Fandom: Star Trek (specifically Prodigy)
Character Journal: [personal profile] holo_momway
Character Type: Canon character
CRAU History: N/A
Canon point: End of S1, right after the Protostar's destruction.
Age: Technically probably only a few years old as a program, but based on (and with the memories of) a woman in her late 30s/early 40s
PB: Kate Mulgrew

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Janeway is an Emergency Training Hologram based on Captain Kathryn Janeway, one of Starfleet's most decorated officers, most famous for her ship, Voyager, being stranded far from Earth for seven years. When her former first officer was promoted to captaincy of the USS Protostar and given a mission to return to the Delta Quadrant, the ship was equipped with this holographic version of his old captain to offer him advice.

Unfortunately the Protostar was caught in a temporal anomaly, sent decades into the future, and captured by the Vau N'Akat, an alien race that had developed a genocidal grudge against Starfleet and the Federation. They planted a weapon in the Protostar that would cause any Starfleet ships that contacted it to fall under its control and attack other Starfleet ships. They also added hidden programming into Janeway and reset her, erasing her memories of Chakotay's command entirely. They intended to take the ship back through the anomaly to the past, but Chakotay escaped and launched it on autopilot, sending it to an unknown location in both time and space.

Decades earlier/later, about a year after the Protostar's launch, a group of young miners, held prisoner by a Vau N'Akat searching for the ship, stumbled upon it and activated it. Banding together, they managed to restore it to working order and escape. After all the excitement had passed, they accidentally activated Janeway's program. Not remembering anything besides her basic purpose, and noting the crew's young ages and nervous demeanor, she assumed they were cadets and immediately took it upon herself to act as their mentor.

Despite their mistrust of adults and authority figures, Janeway quickly wins their trust and mutual respect. Her devotion to them never wavers; even after they confess that they aren't cadets, she reiterates that they're her crew now and she has a responsibility to mentor them, encouraging them to pursue their dreams of finding the Federation and becoming real Starfleet cadets.

The crew soon find evidence of the Protostar's original crew, greatly disturbing Janeway, as it becomes obvious that her program was messed with to hide the truth. They eventually discover the weapon's existence, but when the crew start to believe the only way to protect Starfleet from the weapon is to never return the ship to Federation space, the Vau N'Akat tampering kicks in and Janeway unwittingly tricks the captain into giving her command codes, piloting the ship into the heart of the Federation and locking controls.

Horrified by her betrayal, Janeway isolates herself from the crew so she can't be used against them again. Luckily for her, a timely intervention by the real human now-Admiral Janeway convinces her that she can still help, once her programming has been uncorrupted. The admiral also manages to restore her memories, but she has no more answers about Chakotay's fate.

Unfortunately the Vau N'Akat time travelers manage to board the Protostar and hail the Starfleet ships surrounding it, activating the weapon. The crew, having no way to disable the weapon, decide that they need to destroy the ship, in a way that requires manual control. Janeway volunteers to be that control, reassuring the youths that they can bring a copy of her program with them, but her program had grown too big for the storage devices at hand. She instead gives them one last message of encouragement and flies the ship away, saving Starfleet at the cost of her own existence.

It's a stressful situation, but human Janeway has been through comparable experiences, and holo-Janeway herself has had brushes with horror. Weird is part of the job for Starfleet officers, and sometimes that weird is dangerous. She'll rally quickly and draw on experience and training to keep everyone safe and complete their missions.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

Now in an organic body and not limited by programming, she'll be torn between taking an advisory or a more active leadership role. She still thinks of herself as not the real Janeway and will have to get used to the idea that her existence is as valuable as anyone else's. Just like with the Protostar kids, she'll take any younger characters under her wing, if they're receptive to it. No matter what, she'll protect them and try to solve Uruk's problems.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

She'll be going without NERFs as much as possible. She's already not happy with the base implants, as it's too close to Borg implants. She'll support all efforts to study them and disable any backdoor controls and find a way to remove them safely.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

She has Starfleet training and the memories of seven years' worth of Voyager weirdness. Adapting and surviving is practically second nature when things don't go as planned.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

As a training hologram, cooperating with a group (and helping them cooperate with each other) was literally her job.

As a Starfleet officer, she prefers to find non-violent solutions, but she knows from experience that that's not always possible. She'll advocate for alternatives to killing when she's with the group, and if people kill outside of her presence, she'll want to fully debrief them and make sure that they weren't wantonly murdering. As long as the killing is justifiable, she'll make her peace with it.

ABILITIES

Besides the standard Starfleet officer training and memories of command, remnant memories of the training manuals her program came with might linger, even though she's effectively human now and doesn't have a direct connection to a computer database anymore. She had to draw on them more than once to guide her crew, so those sections could be fresh in her mind. Her physical skills, including combat training, are rather rusty from disuse, as she was originally an intangible hologram and had no need for them.

Extras: Per discussion with mods, she'll be forced into an organic body based on Captain Janeway's at the time the hologram program was created. I'm fine with her being basically human, or something more like the program uploaded into an organic container in a way that might allow her to be removed from it, whichever the mods would prefer.

Age: Somewhere over 1000 years old, looks 30s.
PB: Tom Hiddleston

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Loki is the second son of Odin, Allfather and King of Asgard. While never anyone's favorite (except maybe his mother), he spent centuries fighting alongside his older brother Thor and his friends, defending the Nine Realms from all kinds of foes. He considered himself the smartest of the group and responsible for keeping the others safe, even if it meant using the underhanded tactics and magic that Asgard scorned.

Except that wasn't true, and on the day of Thor's ascension to the throne, his attempt to demonstrate that his brother was not ready resulted in a series of events that left Thor banished, Odin unconscious, and him finding out the truth: He was a Frost Giant, the son of the hated King Laufey, who Odin found abandoned in his last assault on Jotunheim and adopted as his own. Granted the throne in the absence of his father and brother, Loki tried to prove that he was a true Asgardian at heart by finally destroying the Frost Giants once and for all. Unfortunately for him, his attempts to keep Thor from interfering led to Thor proving himself worthy, returning to Asgard, and stopping him. When Odin rejected his pleas that he did what he did for his father, he allowed himself to fall into the Void, intending to die.

But he didn't die, and he was soon found by Thanos, a brutal warlord with universe-wide ambitions. Over the course of a year, he broke Loki through torture and threats, until he offered Loki a way to end it: Loki would do a favor for Thanos, retrieving an Infinity Stone from Earth, and once that was one, he would be free to rule Earth as he saw fit. Loki accepted the offer and Thanos's loaned army and Mind Stone and set out to conquer Earth to soothe his wounded pride and hurt his brother.

Except... he made a different choice. He wanted to hurt others, but the one he wanted to harm most was Thanos. He had no way to do so on his own, but if he used the humans of Earth, he could perhaps rob Thanos of both Infinity Stones he craved as well as the loaned army. He would hurt his brother's pride by saving Thor's beloved humans from a threat Thor didn't even know of, and maybe even earn himself a pardon from Asgard.

He hedged his bets, stealing the Tesseract from SHIELD before making his offer of alliance, with the threat of following Thanos's plan if the humans refused. Despite his attitude and constant pushing of their boundaries, they upheld their end of the agreement, and he released the Chitauri army at an uninhabited location they could defend, after giving them warning of when the enemy would arrive.

The defenders of Earth, the Avengers, surprised him by defeating the army without suffering any casualties. Even more surprising personally was Thor's immediate gratitude once the plan was executed. However, when they returned to Asgard with the Infinity Stones, a new problem arose in Loki's mind. Though he tossed the Mind Stone into the Void, Asgard would keep the Tesseract, making it a target for Thanos. He, as a traitor, would be another target. Thanos might be deterred by Asgard's might if it only contained one item he desired, but two...

Odin was not in a forgiving mood, ignoring Thor's arguments on his brother's behalf. When Odin suggested disowning and exiling Loki, he readily accepted it. In private to Thor and their mother Frigga, he expressed his concerns about Thanos's retaliation. He assured them that even if he had no formal standing in Asgard anymore, he would still protect Asgard in his exile, by traveling and keeping an ear to the ground for any threats, giving them news of any that he could find, while also working on his own to foil them.

Since then Loki has been a nomad, rarely staying in one place for long. He deliberately cultivates a reputation of an enemy of Asgard to attract other enemies, but he has never considered betraying his old home. He also made promises to Earth and the Avengers, to aid them against Thanos, and he intends to uphold those. He visits Earth when he wants to rest in a relatively familiar and friendly setting, to Thor's delight and varying levels of tolerance from the other Avengers.

The game has a sci fi/horror setting, with lots of potentially intense survival horror. While there will be plots that are more sci fi than horror, and plots on missions that are neither sci fi or horror, allowing for respites from traumatizing things, characters need to be able to handle the stress of the setting.

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

He's accustomed to violence and some forms of horror, but not having magic will be a psychological blow. He'll put on an air of being in control but will be hiding how unbalanced he is.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

Have him learn to deal with not having the powers of a god that he can hold over others, hopefully leading to him learning to respect others and learn from them.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

None yet; he might pick up some after questioning Ishtar about the strings attached.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

He certainly thinks he does, but he has more mental fragility than he'll admit. Still, it'll take him some time to actually break

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

His views on cooperation are complicated. He's used to tricking people into doing what he wants, even allies, thinking of himself as the only competent one, but he's started doing more honest cooperation and realizing that it works out for everyone better than he expected. He'll certainly make an effort to try to cooperate at first.

He's probably the one doing the killing. His main objections will be about whether whoever was killed might have been of more use alive.

CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Von Lycaon (Goes by Lycaon)
Fandom: Zenless Zone Zero
Character Journal: [personal profile] howlskeeping
Character Type: Canon character
CRAU History: N/A
Canon point: Just after the version 1.6 story, Bury Your Tears With The Past
Age: Unstated, but likely early 30's
PB: N/A

CHARACTER SUMMARY

Lycaon is the manager of Victoria Housekeeping, a group of maids and butlers that serve both as traditional high society housekeepers as well as armed troubleshooters for the elite of New Eridu, as long as they abide by the terms set forth by Victoria Housekeeping. Though Victoria Housekeeping and by extension Lycaon serve a large variety of clients, they are permanently in the employ of New Eridu's Mayor Mayflower. At a young age, Lycaon was an orphan brought under the wing of an aging phantom thief known as Jack, who taught him both how to survive, various combat skills, as well as instilling in him a strong sense of justice. Brought up by Jack alongside another young man, Hugo, who often chafed against Jack's strict moral code, the two young men would join together after Jack's death to form Mockingbird, a phantom thief guild dedicating to stealing from the undeserving rich to mete out their own form of justice. However, the two would have a falling out after Hugo seemingly murdered his own entire family in a fit of revenge, causing Lycaon to disavow him and causing him to leave to form Victoria Housekeeping.

Lycaon is now a steadfast and dependable leader to the members of Victoria Housekeeping, acting both as a strict and meticulous head butler as well as a caring and dependable mentor to the younger members under his employ. Though most only know him as one of the best housekeepers in New Eridu, a select few know of his company's combat services, up to and including entering Hollows and destroying Ethereals. Yet even fewer still know of his past involvement in Mockingbird, something he would like nothing more to leave buried behind him.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Lycaon often finds himself in stressful and dangerous situations when encountering Ethereals in Hollows. While not directly analogous to the current setting, he will quickly adapt even if certain scenarios and encounters might still somewhat disturb him.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

Mostly just curious to see how well Lycaon bounces off characters from other canons, so I'm mostly playing by ear, but I am open to finding him a place to engage with the plot directly as the story progresses.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

Lycaon already has prosthetic legs designed for combat, and while their utility will be changed due to the implants, he will adapt quickly to both the changes and the new abilities the implants provide as he is accustomed to having to adjust to sudden changes to his body.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Lycaon has skills both as a combat butler and a former phantom thief, so he will be highly suited to survive in this situation.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

Lycaon owns and manages Victoria Housekeeping, so he is accustomed to working with others.

While Lycaon is vehemently opposed to killing other sentient beings, he has demonstrated in his most recent Canon point that he is willing to work with those who do kill in the name of survival or against a greater threat.

POWER SELECTION

Primary NERF: Impact Arc
Secondary NERF: Stealth Arc

Note: He will still retain his combat leg prosthetics, but the frost emitter in them will be disabled due to the NERFs. Instead he will use Impact Arc to reinforce his prosthetics to better improve his kicks.

Lycaon has stealth skills as well as general thievery skills as a result of his phantom thief training, as well as general (unnamed) martial arts training, high society etiquette, cooking skills, and general housekeeping/butler skills

Character Name: Megumi Fushiguro
Fandom: Jujutsu Kaisen
Character Journal: [personal profile] potentialman
Character Type: canon
CRAU History: -
Canon point: Directly preceding the Shibuya Incident.
Age: 15
PB: -

CHARACTER SUMMARY

In a world where the negative emotions of humanity can converge and manifest as horrifying monsters, a secret organization of jujutsu sorcerers fight back from the shadows. Although they have their own drama and some of the traditions of their culture are inherently toxic, the attrition rate is brutal and it's said you have to be at least a little bit crazy to last in the job for long, they're the only thing keeping the human race from becoming monster food.

Megumi Fushiguro is one of these sorcerers, a first-year student at Tokyo Jujutsu High. Although he's reputed to be a prodigy with excellent potential, his own willingness to lay down his life for the greater good is something of a liability in a job where a certain degree of ruthless self-preservation is necessary to prevail. He's a bit too serious for his own good and more than a little antisocial, but he's fiercely protective of his classmates (idiots though they can be) and has a strong moral compass. Megumi knows he's no hero, but he'll do whatever it takes to protect the people he chooses to protect, even if that means his life.

...especially if it means his life. He's still working on that.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

Just another day, really. JJK's setting is pretty brutal for a battle shounen; body horror and nasty moral choices are part of the daily reality, and Megumi has seen more than a few talented sorcerers wash out because they couldn't handle the mental and emotional stress. He actually is at his best when there are other people around, because he's accustomed to being the thinker of his team and their reactions help him keep on track and focus on how they're going to tackle what's in front of them.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

So he has this bad habit of invoking his tactical nuke of a technique when his back is against the wall, and going for the "if I die I'm taking you with me" strategy. That isn't an option here, and he has just been given a wake-up call about his overreliance on it at his canon point, so I want to have him actively work on, as his teacher put it, being "greedier" and fighting like he wants to live, instead of assuming his death will be enough to make things better.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

He is nnnnot going to like this, for sure. Techno-organic sci-fi implants are completely out of his comfort zone, and he'd have an easier time wrapping his mind around something more magical in nature. That said, he's got enough sense to recognize that beggars can't be choosers, and he's going to have to learn to make use of it.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

He absolutely has it in him. His habit of bringing a nuke to a gunfight aside, he is good at thinking on his feet, figuring out what's going on, and formulating plans. It's mostly just that self-sacrificial streak that gets in the way, and he's going to be actively working on that.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

Despite the fact that he's by all appearances the Sasuke™ of his canon, he is actually a great team player. (Too good of one, if anything, as Gojo has pointed out.) He works well even with the characters he doesn't seem to care for much.

⌲ If your character is aged 12-15, do they have skills, resilience, and experience from their canon setting that would allow them to survive without too much reliance on others? Can they realistically keep up with the adults?

JJK is a pretty brutal setting. He's no stranger to life or death situations, tough choices, and things that would make the average person run screaming. He's got this.

Murky moral situations are a big theme in his canon! Depending on the reasoning behind it, things could become hella awkward, or not, but I don't think he'd be unplayable in any case. He and Yuji have some disagreements about the value of a life early on, and then later Megumi observes that they're both probably wrong, and maybe there really isn't a single good answer. He's the type to follow his own conscience, but he's learned not to be overly judgmental of whether someone else's conscience aligns with his.

POWER SELECTION

Primary: blade ARC
Secondary: psionic ARC

ABILITIES

He's a good student who reads a lot of non-fiction and has a good base of knowledge available in modern day Japan. And more esoterically, he's also a font of knowledge on the magical systems that exist in his setting, from the mechanics of jujutsu and being able to recognize and infodump on specialized techniques to knowledge about the society that sorcerers have built up behind the scenes, and the big names and politics therein. (He is actually from one of the big three families, the Zen'in. Zen'in family drama is intense, but they're not all trying to kill him. Yet.)

In a general sense, he's got a good head on his shoulders and is good at analying situations and applying his knowledge under pressure; he frequently is the character who figures out what's going on, puts the clues together to determine what the enemy's powers are doing and how to counter it, and the like.

He's physically fit and has trained with a bunch of different weapons, as well as in hand-to-hand combat.

(I don't have threads yet, so here is his reaction to the arrival post!)

[ Darkness, as far as Megumi is concerned, is not alarming.

The shadows, the chill, the dark shape looming -- all of that feels like something he's glimpsed before but hasn't quite reached, the darkness he tapped into when he made his first clumsy, incomplete attempt at a domain expansion technique. Something he'll understand someday, but for now, a level of power just beyond his grasp.

It's not until he's freshly dumped from a tank and sprawled on the floor in a pile of green slime that it occurs to him that this is probably not the same kind of darkness he reaches for when he uses the Ten Shadows. ]

What the hell?!

[ The screens light up, the image of a woman (sort of?) appears and starts talking, and he immediately fumbles to grab the only thing in reach, a sheet unceremoniously heaped on a bench, and whips it over himself. ]

What --

[ She starts over. ]

Where did --

[ She starts over.

The third time is the charm, because he's never had a problem with pattern recognition. He's not getting anything out of this, at least not until he shuts up and lets her finish, and somewhere in the back of his mind he's very glad that his classmates aren't here, or he's pretty sure he'd never be getting to the end of the lecture and leaving this room.

It's alarming, though. He's not prone to displays of panic, but all this talk of nanites, the weird feeling of something clinging to his spine -- it feels like he's landed in one of those movies Itadori likes, something far outside the normal order of his world. He tries to remember as much of what he's hearing as possible, even if he's going to need to sit with it for a bit to really comprehend it. Maybe he should interrupt, just to get her to run through it all again so he can reinforce what he's heard --

-- and that's clearly not happening, because she finishes, and the floor drops and sends him sliding into -- somewhere.

That's fine. Nue can catch him, if it's going to drop him into any kind of opening, and he instinctively raises his hands to call the shikigami forth -- ]

Nue!

[ Nothing happens. He lands in a crumpled heap in an unfamiliar hallway. No big pit, so it wasn't actually necessary, but... ]

Nue?

[ Something is off about this place. It's not like he's completely blocked; he can sense the normal flow of cursed energy, but it's as if it keeps slipping back every time he tries to touch it. ]

You've got to be kidding me.

Personal Belonging: Just one of the buttons from his Jujutsu High uniform. They're distinctive, with a funky little swirly design that people in the know recognize as a sign that he's a jujutsu sorcerer.

Extras: His canon powers are based in magic, so if the stars and the plots align I would like for him to be able to summon up some of his critters if it works well for a plot. (He can do dogs and bunnies, among other things. I totally want to bust out the therapy animals after the squad has a particularly awful experience, at some point.)

CRAU History: N/A
Canon point: Splatoon 3, just before the events of the Side Order DLC

CHARACTER SUMMARY

In a distant future where human beings are extinct, evolved sea life have become the dominant life force on earth. By far the most populous and dominant are the two races of the Inkfish species, Inklings (squid) and Ocotarians (octopus). In some places they live in harmony, but the Octarian dictator, DJ Octavio, seeks to change that. Deep in a crumbling underground dome called Octo Valley, he cloned Octarians with Inkling DNA, creating a race of perfect soldiers: the Octolings.

Agent 8 is an Octoling who defected when Octavio's defeat at the hands of a small group of Inklings upended Octo Valley society. No longer content with his life of violence, military service, and state-approved art, he set out at the age of 14 to find his way to the surface. On the way, he lost his memories and became subject 10008 of a cruel experiment at the hands of one of humanity's leftover research facilities with the ultimatum: pass the tests of the Deepsea Metro subway system and go to the Promised Land, or fail and be another ink stain on the concrete.

He was about the least likely candidate to succeed, a shy and sensitive artist whose inherent compassion and deep curiosity about others was an uneasy fit for the life of violence he was quite literally made for. Despite that, his own determination and some help from the friends he made along the way kept him going through each and every trial, even after the countless bombs strapped to his back went off and forced him to respawn. But still, impossibly, he made it, stepping into the light of the rising sun for the first time in his life.

Now 19 years old, he's been living and thriving on the surface not only with Inklings, but other Octoling refugees. While he can't seem to shed a lot of his military habits, he's also spent that time trying everything he can get his tentacles on. His memories from Octo Valley are still hazy from the experiment, but the new ones he's made make it bother him much less.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

With a strange sense of nostalgia, actually.

Alright, it’s not quite the same, but Agent 8 did spend the first 14 years of his life in an industrialized underground with a shortage of resources. He’s also been the subject of a brutal and difficult experiment where the punishment for failure was immediate violent death. He’s been straight up ear-tagged before, he knows how this goes down. It’ll be rough, the worst thing he’s ever been through probably, especially now that he knows a totally different life of domestic freedom, but he can at least act like he’s been here before and back it up.

It’s also worth noting that even the prosperous and vibrant above-ground world he escaped to has plenty of horror to go around: Huge swaths of land outside the major cities are uninhabitable wastes. Agriculture is so difficult that cannibalism of dead bodies is not only normal, but industrialized. Swarms of ravenous fish monsters invade cities devouring everyone in their path multiple times a year and kids as young as 13 are routinely hired to deal with them, etc etc.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

This is a big TBD, I usually don’t know this until I’ve been in the game and playing for bit. I’d like to do something with the habits he’s picked up as a soldier (obsessive cleanliness, anxiety when he can’t over-prep for situations, obedience to authority) clashing with the ones he’s developed from the life he’s built (non-violence, trusting others without having to determine loyalty, being open and honest with people) but I don’t have...concrete plans about that.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

For one thing, he’ll be cut off from most of his natural abilities: his ink sacks will dry up, he won’t be able to transform into an octopus and swim up walls, he will no longer be able to get his body through any hole his beak will fit through, and his chromatophores are completely unresponsive meaning he can no longer change color, not only costing him some camouflage ability but also his ability to express himself and color-coordinate with his outfit.

...These things matter to Inkfish.

Equally as pressing: most of his stealth training is based around the abilities that come with being an Octoling. Staying out of sight is easier when you can provide your own hiding spots and it only takes 2.5 seconds to scale a wall. It’s a totally different set of tools to achieve the same result and is likely to clash with his instincts. He’s more likely to try and get up high or around before he remembers he can turn invisible. In a life or death situation, that mistake could cost him dearly.

Techopathy, conversely, is just an extension of skills he already has and will be much easier to deal with.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Agent 8 has had a variety of training: he’s good with multiple types of weapons, even if he’ll need to adjust from his typical -ink based ones to weapons that are deadly to non-Inkfish. This includes both projectile and hand-to-hand weaponry. In the same vein, he’s very good with computers and tech. In his canon he’s skilled enough to assist in the creation of an AI sentient enough to go rogue because it’s feelings were hurt, even if he wasn’t doing the bulk of the programming. He’s also very athletic. Octolings don’t build muscle well due to their odd biology, but he’s reasonably strong and extremely acrobatic and lithe, with his avid participation in team sports and a physically demanding job keeping him fit outside the strict discipline of the army.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

Agent 8’s early life was all about training to be a solider, which requires a high degree of cooperation and communication. Even when he struck out on his own and acted as a lone agent behind enemy lines, he’s always had someone to play mission control and he always followed their instructions to the letter. If he’s hampered by anything, it’s his difficulty speaking up when he’s uncomfortable and his intense need to be useful to the people he cares about.

OOC I’m fine with anything as long as open and clear communication is maintained. IC, Agent 8 is aware that killing is sometimes necessary, but he deeply dislikes it and it absolutely won’t be his first choice for himself or others.

Personal Belonging: A vinyl copy of the single Into The Light, the song his friends Pearl and Marina wrote for him after he reached the surface. The words “Welcome Home Eight!!!!” is written in sharpie above both their signatures.

Extras:
-The canon is fuzzy on when exactly Eight regained his full memories. I’m making the executive decision that at the point I’m taking him from, he remembers enough to give a cliff notes overview of his past before the Deepsea Metro, but most of the details and some specific events are blurry and indistinct. Most relevantly, he doesn’t remember his name before he became Agent 8. I’ve chosen “Talon” in case it ever comes up for any events, but he doesn’t know that and will continue to go by “Eight” even if he learns.

CHARACTER SUMMARY

[CW: Parental neglect/abuse, alcohol abuse]

Keni comes from the 'poor area" of an already economically struggling, isolated, mountain town. It's a small place surrounded mostly by woods and farmlands. At first glance, it's rather unassuming, but there's always been something off about the place and the people in it. Weird things happen there that don't seem to be happening anywhere else. Most of the town either attempts to ignore the weird happenings when it's possible or easily "forgets" about them. But somehow, he and his friends always seem to end up at the center of the weirdness. There's a cult working out of the town dedicated to bringing "Old Gods" back into their world, the cops have been taking "undesirables" they assume won't be missed, a local coffee shop was caught drugging its customers, previously tame animals have turned dangerous, the people in town can turn weirdly aggressive or chaotic out of nowhere, and they've also had an emergence of "zombies", eldritch monsters, and aliens.

A year ago, Keni discovered that his parents had briefly been a part of the cult, and they let them do a ritual on his mother when she was pregnant with him. Instead of its intended purpose of bringing an Elder God into their world, seemingly all it did, was cursed him to constantly die in horrific ways, then resurrect again, waking up in his bed as if nothing ever happened. He's lived alone with the curse his whole life, since no one ever remembers or believes him when he tries to tell them about it. While he's tried to find out more about it on his own, particularly how to end it, he's hit nothing but brick walls. His parents supposedly remember next to nothing about their time with the cult. The few members of the cult he's tracked down either knew as little as his parents, refused to give a straightforward answer, or were very shoot-first-answer-questions-never. And the Eldritch creatures they've managed to bring back weren't exactly chatty, either. So he's come to the conclusion that he might not be able to get answers or find a way to end his curse, but that he can at least try to use his curse for good when he can. And the world has given him quite a lot of opportunity to put those good intentions to the test.

While usually he's dealing with the horrors of the town alongside his friends, he's also taken to acting as a vigilante on the sly. Which has sometimes led to him butting heads with his supposed "best-friend", who will occasionally try to use the most recent town horror to his advantage. Whether he's working with his friends or on his own, he's ended up helping to save his friends, family, or the town multiple times, all while still having to participate in having a "normal life".

Around his friends, Keni comes off as a quiet, chill kid with bad impulse control, and a crude/childish sense of humor. But at home, he's had to step up and start taking on more adult responsibilities since age 10. It probably doesn't come as a surprise that his parents aren't exactly great caregivers. They're neglectful, abusive toward each other and his older brother (who emancipated himself two years ago), and it's forced Keni to be "the responsible one". He's his little sister's main caregiver, and is often stuck parenting his own parents. The only time he really gets to be a kid is around his friends, and even then, things haven't been the same since his main friend group recently broke apart, leaving him the involuntary linchpin between the five of them.

SUITABILITY

⌲ How do you expect your character to respond to the stress, unfamiliarity, and horror of the setting?

The kid has been in so many horrific situations. His whole life has been a long-running horror show. This is just another Monday. At least here he doesn't have to deal with people downplaying the horrors or acting like they're not happening.

While he'll definitely still be shocked, scared, or upset at times, he's good at pulling himself together and working through it to do what needs to be done, especially if he has other people to lean on/watch out for. The way's he deals with stress might not always be the most healthy, though, and in the long term, they'll probably have to be addressed.

⌲ What do you hope to do with your character long-term?

A lot of Keni's big character moments have centered around the ways that he takes care of the people around him (like supporting the people around him emotionally, taking on a vigilante role to protect his town, helping to financially support his family, or taking on a more parental role with his little sister), vs how little he cares for himself. He has a penchant for self-destructive behavior; whether it's struggling with his own addictions, giving into his more reckless impulses, or being self-sacrificing to a fault. He's used to putting the needs of others before himself, has largely stopped caring about how much he might get hurt, and has very little self-worth that isn't tied to how useful he is to the people he cares about.

In-game I can see him keeping with that habit, leaning into a kind of caregiver/support role on the team (something that will be easy to fall into with the NERF's he'll be given), and having to quickly learn that he can't just keep feeding himself to the wolves with no consequences. People will remember and care now if he lets himself get hurt, and death will have a much bigger price.

⌲ If you're giving your character NERFs, how will they deal with the implants?

On one hand, it's going to upset him that it feels like the universe just found one more way to violate his body.

But on the other hand, it is cool to have superpowers that aren't intrinsically tied to sacrificing himself, and he'll be secretly fascinated with the tech.

And on a more petty level he's gonna be peeved he didn't get one of the really cool offensive powers.

⌲ Does your character currently have the mentality and skills that would allow them to adapt and survive? If your character doesn't, do you think they'd have the capacity to learn quickly?

Mentally he's arguably too used to this kind of stuff happening to him, and accustomed to needing to quickly adapt to new scary situations. As far as skills go though, he could always use improvement. While he's done some fighting as a vigilante and knows the basics of fighting and wielding a weapon, he could use some help from people who've had more experience.

⌲If they're not used to cooperating with others, will they be able to adapt to cooperating with the group?

While Keni is a quiet kid and has even been described as a "loner", he really doesn't like feeling alone, and most of the kids his own age seem to like or at least tolerate him. He's generally a pretty amicable little dude, even if he's not very open with most people.

He's also used to working in a group in stressful or horrific situations. However, he does have issues with being a bit too much of a follower or a pushover at times. He can put his foot down when he's irritated enough, or when something is really important to him, but most of the time he's very "go-along to get-along".

The only other issue I can see cropping up in game, as far as his ability to work with others, would be his willingness to trust the adults in the room. While he won't exactly be rebelling against their every order, he'll likely be wary of most of them, always waiting for the other shoe to drop. He'll get especially distrustful if they're trying to parent him or showing some kind of "unwarranted" interest in him. It's just going to take most of them a lot of time and effort to build any lasting trust with him.

OOC: I'm good with playing out whatever might happen, so long as everyone involved is on the same page.

IC: He won't stand for killing potentially innocent beings, but he's not going to argue against killing out of self-defense. Would prefer non-lethal approaches to problems though, and he will take issue with anyone who has a consistent shoot-first policy.

POWER SELECTION

(2) secondary NERFs

ABILITIES

- Decent at hand-to-hand combat for someone who never had formal training in fighting. His style is pretty sloppy, and he's only slightly above average strength for a kid his size and height (5'1, wiry, and slightly malnourished), but he's fast, somewhat acrobatic (think basic high school cheer-leading level acrobatic skills), quick-thinking, observant, knows how to take a hit and has a high tolerance for pain.

- Is also decent at parkour.

- Knows the basics of how to use hunting rifles and a hunting bow.

- Can hunt and fish.

- Picked up some rudimentary sewing and knitting skills from his mom.

- Has done odd jobs on some of the neighboring farms and picked up some skills and knowledge about farming in the process.

- Knows a good amount about human anatomy and the kinds of damage that can be done to it (though no where near as much as someone who's actually had medical training), from the sheer amount of times he's been killed or mutilated. Can keep a cool and clinical head when it comes to blood and gore.

- He's become very mechanically inclined due to growing up helping his dad and brother with fixing the house, appliances and the junk car's that his dad buys. He's also developed a fascination with engineering and general science (something he usually keeps on the down-low).

- Has been told he could make a good counselor. He's compassionate, a good listener, soft-spoken, and generally non-judgmental. Not sure if this would count toward a diplomacy skill but it feels adjacent.

- Multilingual (can speak English, Spanish, and some broken Japanese)
