ARRIVAL/WELCOME

「ARRIVAL」

A dark void appears, so dark no light can escape. A cage of metallic goo erupts from it, liquid tentacles reaching out from the abyss and dragging you through. As the air is pulled from your lungs, you get a glimpse of the void between worlds, endless bright nothing, the only color a black spot in the far distance. The coldness that seeps into your bones drags you into unconsciousness just as an impossibly large dark shape looms.

When you wake, whether you were dumped with little preamble into a practice mission first or wake in Uruk for the first time, you find yourself in a tank full of a sticky, greenish liquid, the texture of cough syrup. The tank suddenly opens, pouring you unceremoniously on to a grimy, grated floor. Tubes that were shoved down your throat suddenly retract, leaving behind a bitter, metallic taste and a lump in your throat. Other metallic cords dis-attach from your body with pneumatic popping noises. You're naked, with only a sheet on a nearby bench to cover yourself with.

This is how you can see instantly that you've been altered, if you haven't had a chance on a practice mission to see it yet. Technology is threaded through the flesh of your arms, and if you reach far enough, you can feel something clinging to the flesh of your back like it's giving your spine a deeply unwelcome hug.

The room is small, containing only the tank of slimy goo you were unleashed from, the bench, and, apparently, walls that are also screens. They light up with the image of a strange woman, four-armed, with glowing teal skin and irises. If you've been on a practice mission, you've met her before.
Congratulations. You have been chosen as a Vesper, an agent of the city of Uruk. My name is Ishtar. I am an artificial intelligence here to guide you on your progress as a champion of the city's advancement.

As she goes through a basic outline of your newly installed implants, whatever they may be, any questions asked are not met with answers, just a long pause paired with a fairly scathing look, like a substitute teacher furious that a student is interrupting with a raised hand. Then she carries on in her welcome tutorial, starting the spiel all over again. From the beginning. This will continue until she's allowed to finish her speech uninterrupted, no matter how many attempts it takes until you no longer interrupt.

While she talks, the videos playing on the screen show crude drawings of figures manifesting various suit enhancements, like the comms system and the weapons that various types of implants produce.
Your Base Implant should start producing enough nanites to form an Enki suit and other enhancements within the next hour. If you received enhancements for a trial mission, please note they may have been altered or re-calibrated. Please stay within the confines of Esagila Base and refrain from moving beyond the sensor grid until you've armed yourself at the Armory and all implants are fully operational. Otherwise, you may face such hazards as--

The little graphics of crude figures are shown facing an assortment of terrible fates, looking all the more absurd in their powerpoint clip art style.
--assault, mutilation, mutation by nanite, evisceration by nanite, manual evisceration, disintegration by corrosive substances, drowning, radiation poisoning, absorption by hostile lifeform, and other assorted forms of mauling and violent death.

A winning smile.
Uruk thanks you for your service. I look forward to working with you. Have a nice day!

The floor suddenly drops and you're shot down the world's worst fun slide, greased with all the slime that came out of your tank, into a hallway that almost looks like a sewage outflow. Fortunately, while the smell is musty and strange, you only smell the sickly smell of the tank goo, nothing else. Unfortunately, unless you scavenge for something else, that sheet is all you'll have for clothes for the next hour.

The base is vaguely habitable and you'll find you're not alone.

When you finally dare to look beyond the sensor grid, the city just beyond the base's entrance seems to loom infinitely, blotting out any possible sky. Humid air shifts rhythmically through hallways like the breath of a sleeping giant and there's an overbearing sense of presence, as if one is never alone, a sensation of always being watched and the vaguest sense of a disapproving gaze passing down judgement. Dark hallways lie around every corner, gaping maws with unknown threats scraping along bulkheads, rattling in vents.

You could stay at the base. But if you want answers, if you want a chance of going home, you won't find them in the wreckage there. To find out the truth of your capture and transformation, you must venture out into the city's depths...

And hope they don't swallow you whole.
