DEATHS

「GULA CHAMBERS」

Revival is possible via the Gula Chambers in the Infirmary, medical tanks full of goo that pump nanites in to repair and rebuild someone's body, as well as housing complicated machinery for guiding the knitting of tissue or fabrication of components (for the inorganic).

As long as someone's Gilga-mesh kicked in at the moment of death and their brain is intact, they can be revived, even if all that's left is the head or the Gilga-mesh enclosed braincase. The Gula chamber will read their DNA and rebuild their body based on that, tissue layer by tissue layer, organ by organ. During the process the Gilga-mesh will unfreeze and release the brain or equivalent organ (such as a memory core), remove any preservation, and allow it to be reattached to the body that's being constructed or repaired. If the tissues of the head and skull are too decayed and damaged, they'll simply be deconstructed and a fresh head will be constructed around the preserved brain instead.

For inorganic lifeforms, scans of their schematics and the substances they're comprised of will have been taken upon their arrival and they'll be reconstructed based off that.

Injuries that destroy the whole body and brain (or equivalent) are fully fatal. The person's remains must also be collected and brought to a Gula chamber within 24 hours of their death, before the Gilga-mesh system fails and stops preserving their brain.

Afterward their body will be completely restored, though any damage their body had that is at odds with their DNA will be etched into the body by the system based off previous scans and recorded images. So things like scars and missing limbs will remain the same as they were before, to lessen any psychological effects that might be caused by changing any major aspects of the person's body. This means that artificial limbs and cybernetic implants will be rebuilt as they were.

Bodies that are damaged instead of reconstructed may have scars around the damaged area. Limbs or other body parts sometimes will not be able to be regrown if the Gula chamber malfunctions. The presence of radiation or acid damage makes this more likely.

During the healing process, the system will re-implant the person's Base Implant and any Primary or Secondary Implants they may have.

「REVIVES」

Due to irreparable damage made to the system in the past, for an unknown reason it can only successfully revive people up to 2 times - and not always. Sometimes it stops at 1 or can't revive someone even once.

Characters will be informed that the system reviving them can be deeply unreliable and that 2 times is only a possibility, not a guarantee. In the past, the system has sometimes failed even despite the brain of the patient being well-preserved and brought under the time limit.

Nearly maxing out the time limit on a Gilga-mesh, nanite contamination, or minor damage to the brain right before death (like concussions), are thought to be possible contributing factors to having less than 2 revivals, but it's not known for sure.

Players can decide how they want to handle this and decide whether their character would have 0, 1, or 2 total revives, if they're considering possibly killing a character off. The mods will not dictate if a character has less than the total 2 and leave it in player hands. The uncertainty is only IC to allow for the tension of characters not knowing for sure if they're on their last (or only) life.

「REVIVAL CONSEQUENCES」

Even with successful revives there are serious consequences for a character.

To begin with, the revival process uplinks the brain as one of the first actions, to prevent further degradation of the brain or running out of time with the Gilga-mesh system preserving it. While they limit most of the pain, the sedatives or sedative devices the Gula chambers provide are often not strong enough to leave someone fully unconscious through the process.

This means that characters are half-conscious as they're being rebuilt. They feel considerable pain as nerves are reattached and as they go in and out, they can actually feel tissues knitting together and being reconstructed. Sometimes they can even catch glimpses of their partially reconstructed body and become aware of how much of it is currently missing or damaged, a possibly alarming prospect if they were only brought back as a head or brain case.

The heavy use of nanites and more violent reimplantation of implants (which is usually a longer and more gentle process when they first arrive) can also cause negative effects that last for a short time after.

By default, all of those that revive may have temporary implant problems. Their primary or secondary implants may temporarily not work, or have the effects of overuse happen much more quickly. Some may even be at risk of their base implant not forming their protective suit properly or losing suit integrity faster in a bad situation. Comms or translators may act up and struggle to function. Long-term overuse effects of implants can also happen faster.

Other effects are open to player choice. They can expect to deal with 1 or more of the following effects for several IC weeks after reconstruction:

  • body dysmorphia: it may feel as if their body is something alien and not their own, as if their brain is floating in some kind of alien construct. This can be extremely uncomfortable and make it difficult to function or feel grounded. For some it can lead to dissociation

  • Alice in Wonderland syndrome: Objects can seem much larger or smaller than they actually are, leading to extreme disorientation

  • hallucinations: these can be anything from just deceptive auditory hallucinations to seeing terrifying images or images of gore.

  • paranoia: Characters will have paranoid delusions about their crewmates. Or be paranoid about attacks from the rest of the city. Or feel as if something malevolent is following them around and sometimes think they see glimpses of a shadowy figure occasionally behind them.

  • memory loss: This can be the loss of a specific important memory, losing the memory of an important skill or set of skills, losing the memory of a specific person and having their personality and other memories shift to reinforce they were never there, or even total amnesia

  • pain: The character can be in considerable pain after reconstruction, too much to easily function. This pain is most often nerve pain due to nerve shock, but can be muscular or tendon-based from the way the body was knitted together. This can lead to difficulty doing basic tasks or even walking. Some can wind up bed bound until the body fully recovers.

First Revive: Alongside implant malfunctions for at least 1 week, the requirement is at minimum 1 other effect for at least 1 IC week

Second Revive: Alongside implant malfunctions for at least 1 week, the requirement is at least 2 other effects for 1 IC week, or 1 effect for 2 IC weeks

Players can choose more effects if they'd like to go over the minimums. Players can also suggest other effects here and the mods will let you know if they're approved and possibly even add them to the list as options.

「NOTIFICATION」

Please notify the mods of a character death below, and list the death effects chosen - or suggest a new one.

NOTE: Deaths on tdms don't have to be listed if a character is new as the TDM mechanic allows for unlimited revivals until a character is apped.
